At three months, Amara was very active. Everyone who knew her knew that she was a bubbly little angel. The little baby was chubby and fair. She slept fitfully without disturbing her mother and when she needed to eat, it was all without fuss.
Chika, her mother blessed God daily for the kind of daughter he gave her. She wasn’t stressed. In fact, as a first time mom, she glowed and had adequate sleep.
Everyone was expecting Amara to start walking immediately she was one years old. Two years passed and yet Amara showed no signs of taking her first step. Different advice flew in from all corners and all yielded no result.
Chika cried and complained to her husband. “What’s wrong with our daughter?” she thought.
Her husband could only hold her to himself as he talked to God underneath his breath. He kept saying, “God, help us.”
Another two years passed but Amara still hadn’t taken her first step.
The doctors said something about her having weak knees and legs. He diagnosed her with Amytrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The day Chika and Jude got that report, they cried and asked God why.
”God, you promised me that you would give me children that would be great. I remember that you told me that my seed would be healthy. You said they would excel and be blessings to generations. But you never told me that Amara wouldn’t be able to walk.” Chika cried with tears running down her eyes.
”How am I supposed to cope, Lord? How do I help her when she gets bullied by those she wants to play with? Lord, why?” She screamed as tears rolled down her closed eyes.
”People are talking. They are saying, ‘see them, with their disabled child.’ You never told me that Amara was never going to walk.”
She wailed hard.
”Say something, God! Say something.”
But he was silent…
Jude came near his wife and pulled her up. “God is faithful, babe. God is faithful.”
With mucus streaming down her nose, she looked up at him. “God is faithful?”
”Yes.” he replied. “He is faithful and he will heal our daughter.”
In all this, they consistently taught their daughter to trust in God. From a young age, she understood the ways of God.
They lived their lives normally. Parents went to work while a nanny who also doubled as a tutor stayed home and taught Amara the basics. She grasped all she was taught easily. She was an intelligent kid.
She played with angels. She sang songs and drew images of all she saw.
Her parents were happy that she was happy. ‘Only if she could walk.’ they thought.
The night before her 5th birthday, Amara went to bed and had a dream.
She was seated on her usual seat and she found herself in their garden.
She saw a man with a very shining face and she recognised him as Jesus. She saw her angels who she normally played with and thought, oh it’s time to play again.
Then the man with the shining face called her. “Amara, come.”
She was about to start crawling towards him when he stopped her.
”No love. Don’t crawl. Walk.”
”I don’t know how to.” She said, confused and looking at him.
”I’ll teach you.”
He walked towards her and held her up. Her legs wobbled and she almost sat down but he held her up and asked her to trust him.
”Okayyy!” she said in her cute voice.
He let her hand go and then asked her to come towards him as he walked backwards with a smile.
Amara took her first step and the next and the next and she laughed out loud as she played in the garden.
When she woke up, it was barely dawn but she ran into her parents room and jumped on their bed to tell them about her dream.
Her parent opened their eyes and tried to take in their surroundings.
Amara grinned and their eyes opened wide.
”Thank you Jesus.” Chika cried as she hugged her daughter close.
”This is the best birthday gift ever.” Jude remarked as he wiped the tear that threatened to fall after listening to his daughter recount her dream happily.
